Student Spotlights

Jennifer Yates

Jennifer Yates is a second-year in ACU’s M.Ed. in Leadership of Learning program.  She is also an 8th grade American History teacher at Madison Middle School in Abilene, Texas.

After taking 12 hours in conflict resolution as a part of the M.Ed. program, Yates chose to attend the Department of Conflict Resolution’s Summer Residency Session last July in order to earn the Certificate in Conflict Resolution for Educators.  Inspired by Laura and Bob Otey’s presentation at the Summer Residency Session, Yates decided to write a grant proposal to The Abilene Education Foundation requesting peer mediation curriculum.  Yate’s proposal received funding and she is working to implement a peer mediation program at Madison. More>>

Betsy Freeman

Betsy Freeman recently graduated from ACU with a M.A. in Education and is currently beginning the second year of ACU’s M.A. in Conflict Resolution program.  Freeman is an educator at Cooper High School in Abilene, Texas where she teaches the behavioral adjustment class, a program for at-risk students who are repeatedly sent to the district’s reassignment center for fighting and gang-related activity.

In fall 2006 Freeman saw the need for a peer mediation program at the high school as well as conflict resolution curriculum for the behavioral adjustment class.  She collaborated with her husband (who is a principal, coach, and also a recent graduate of ACU’s M.A. in Education program) to write a grant to the STAR Foundation, a grant program through Abilene Independent School District.  More >>
