Alternatives in Mediation
![]() A primary objective of the Center for Conflict Resolution is to make all students, faculty, and staff at ACU aware of the tremendous benefit of recognizing conflict and addressing it realistically from a Christian perspective. A major forum for this initiative is Alternatives in Mediation ("AIM"). AIM provides students the opportunity to work through problems and disputes in a wholesome, productive way while maintaining personal accountability. AIM's mission is to inspire students to embrace peacemaking as a constant part of their daily lives by providing them with the opportunities, skills, and encouragement to face and resolve conflict. Students finding themselves in a dispute with a fellow student may apply for these free conflict resolution services. All parties to the conflict are invited to participate in a voluntary mediation process conducted in accordance with AIM's Mediation Rules. The mediation is conducted by a volunteer mediator who has met educational and experiential requirements. All volunteer mediators have access to a mediation supervisor (the executive director of the Center for Conflict Resolution). Individuals interested in volunteer positions should review Conflict Practica Openings. The goal of mediation is for the parties to work toward an agreement that is mutually acceptable and beneficial to all parties. The volunteer mediator does not serve as a judge or arbiter, but only as a facilitator. Students seeking assistance in conflict resolution may complete the Application for Services form online. Or, you may obtain a form from the office of Campus Life, from the Center for Conflict Resolution office or may download the application in Adobe Reader format (.pdf). A case associate will then contact all parties and a volunteer mediator will be assigned. In the event that all parties will not voluntarily submit to the conflict resolution process, AIM will offer advice and coaching to assist in settling the matter. The office of Campus Life may directly refer students to Alternatives in Mediation in lieu of proceedings in the Campus Life office. AIM does not provide legal counseling or analysis of legal issues. Confidentiality of all matters discussed in conflict resolution will be maintained unless disclosure is required by law, by university policy or regulation, or as a stipulation made as part of a referral by the office of Campus Life. AIM charges no fees for services provided to students of Abilene Christian University. ACU officials (e.g. residence directors, director of residence life, director of judicial affairs) are authorized to mandate student mediations. To schedule a mandated student mediation complete the Application for Mandated AIM Services. For more information, contact the Center for Conflict Resolution.
