The role of the mediator is to accompany each of the participants in the conflict in the self-discovery of their journey to the conflict situation. The mediator helps each realize the interpretation, judgment and constraints that they are subconsciously imposing on the other. The technique is of mirroring, active listening, empathizing, but also challenging and insisting.
