John Gaffney

John Gaffney is an Adjunct Professor of Law at the School of Law, University College Cork, Ireland. John has worked in the arbitration practices of international firms in London, Paris and Abu Dhabi, served as a legal officer with the United Nations Compensation Commission in Geneva, and was a Partner with a top-tier commercial law firm in Dublin and commercial law firms in his native Cork. John has advised on matters seated around the world under a variety of rules, including the ICC, UNCITRAL, LCIA, DIFC-LCIA, DIAC, and ADCCAC rules, as well as ad hoc proceedings. John is also an Editorial Board Member, ICSID Review – Foreign Investment Law Journal, a Member of the Practical Law Arbitration Consultation Board, included in the List of Candidates Suitable for Appointment as Arbitrators under EU trade agreements, the Joint Winner of the “How it all started” Category of the IBA Arb 40 Common Heritage of International Arbitration Competition for the Most Meaningful Personal Stories, a Member of the ICC Commission for Arbitration and ADR; on the Sounding Board of the Business and Human Rights Arbitration Project Editorial Board; a Sustaining Member of the European Law Institute, a Country Reporter for the UAE for the Institute of Transnational Arbitration and a Co-Editor (for Middle East), ASIL Commentaries on Private International Law. John has published extensively and spoken widely on international dispute resolution, including contributions to a number of leading textbooks. He teaches a course on international commercial arbitration as part of a Master’s Program at the Sorbonne University in Abu Dhabi.
