The Reflective Practice Institute is starting a new Reflective Practice Group for new and experienced mediators on November 1, 2023.

This live online program teaches mediators specialized skills and techniques for mediating adult family conversations (in person and/or online) around issues such as living arrangements, caregiving, financial planning, inheritance/estate disputes, medical decisions, family vacation homes, family communication, and decision-making.

Join trainers Arline Kardasis and Crystal Thorpe, with guest experts from the fields of elder law and gerontology. Six half-days packed with content, skill-building, role plays, and opportunities to interact with other participants. A 3-day training, participants will be introduced to the psychology behind the practices and beneficial results gained from restorative justice practices. They will engage in experiential exercises to practice the techniques and to begin developing the skills to facilitate conferences. This intense one-day class focuses on the ethics and principles of basic arbitration. Emphasis is placed on the importance of communicating for arbitrator success. Explored are the core tenets of arbitration, to include the arbitrator’s opening statement, the oath of all participants, arbitration formats and procedures, the Federal Arbitration and Texas Arbitration Acts, and the enforceability of the provisions. Re-Framing is an essential skill for all mediators.

The focus of this one-day class is practical but will review in-depth procedures and advance participants’ ability to conduct complex civil and international arbitrations. We will take a close look at the overall proceedings, and the finer points of complex arbitrations, including a section on the laws of evidence from the perspective of the arbitrator. Foundations of Organizational Ombuds Practice is offered multiple times each year in various locations, and online. The course covers the fundamentals of the organizational ombuds role based on the principles of confidentiality, neutrality, independence, and informality. Learn how to work with visitors to an office as well as how to act as a change agent within your organization. Practice key ombuds skills of listening, asking questions, clarifying, generating options, and moving to actions throughout the ombuds process. This is a 2-day intensive course specific to Mediating Child Protective Services (CPS) cases. The sessions include review of the complex parties of CPS mediation, understanding childhood trauma, parent dynamics, ethical issues, and the legal framework of CPS cases.
