Optional: Two Dates TBD
Family mediation provides mediators with a wide variety of contexts and dilemmas. This course, for experienced mediators, will focus on six core themes and sets of tools to help you to deepen your skill set and work toward becoming a stronger and more productive mediator. Participants will choose one strand to follow throughout.
THREE STRANDS:
Divorce and couples’ mediation: working with couples married, unmarried or post- divorce to resolve conflicts.
Juvenile mediation: working with those under the age of 18 in court, family or other contexts to resolve conflicts involving adults. Facilitating family meetings.
Elder/multi-generational mediation: working with contexts involving elders including end of life, estate and long-standing family conflicts.
During each session, participants will work with the whole group and also have break-out sessions to work with those in their chosen strand.
Monday March 11 • Trust—building trust in the mediation process.
Monday March 18 • Goals—setting goals as a foundation.
Monday March 25 • Power—handling power differentials.
Monday April 1 • Future—creating a future vision.
Monday April 8 • Brave—saying what’s been unsaid and needs saying.
Monday April 15 • Calm—handling emotions productively.
Optional sessions—included:
Monday Date TBD—What is Couples Mediation? How is it different from Couples Therapy? How do you get started? Who should do this kind of mediation? What does it look like in action?
Monday Date TBD—Try Couples Mediation. Simulation/role play of a mediation with a couple who want to stay together and resolve conflicts through mediation

April 24, 2024 – Seattle WA
Family Mediators can feel a lot of pressure to manage behaviours that block productive dialogue and get in the way of finding meaningful solutions. And yet, our dominant negotiation model falls short when it comes to addressing the irrational and demanding behaviors and the (understandably) strong emotions that we experience in our work.
Insight Mediation offers a theoretically sound foundation for working with conflict behaviours in a way that doesn’t threaten, facilitating dialogue rather than debate. It is being lauded as the “fourth pillar” of conflict resolution and divorce professionals are describing it as “transformative”, “sensible, deep and practical” and even “life-changing”.
