Mara Linder, JD MA

Mara Linder is an Arizona divorce mediator, attorney, and counseling professional with more than 34 years of legal experience, over 19 years dedicated exclusively to divorce mediation, and extensive experience helping thousands of couples navigate the divorce process with greater clarity, privacy, and respect.

As founder of Modern Mediation, a boutique divorce mediation firm based in Scottsdale, Arizona, Mara works with professionals, physicians, executives, entrepreneurs, business owners, and high-asset couples seeking a sophisticated, private, and solution-focused approach to divorce. Her practice focuses exclusively on mediation and out-of-court resolution.

Drawing from both her legal background and Master’s Degree in Professional Counseling, Mara brings a calm, emotionally intelligent, and highly strategic approach to complex divorce matters involving business interests, executive compensation, retirement accounts, real estate portfolios, parenting issues, spousal maintenance, and high-conflict communication dynamics. Her mediation philosophy is grounded in client-centered communication, positive psychology, and practical problem-solving designed to preserve dignity, reduce unnecessary conflict, and help families move forward with greater clarity and stability.

Modern Mediation offers a concierge-style divorce mediation experience supported by a multidisciplinary professional team that may include attorneys, wealth advisors, QDRO and retirement specialists, divorce and co-parenting coaches, mortgage and real estate professionals, and tax advisors. The firm also collaborates seamlessly with clients’ existing financial, legal, and therapeutic professionals when preferred.

The firm assists clients through every stage of the divorce process, including:

  • Divorce mediation and settlement negotiations
  • High-net-worth and complex asset division
  • Parenting plans and legal decision-making agreements
  • Child support and spousal maintenance discussions
  • Preparation and filing of court documents
  • Drafting Property Settlement Agreements and Consent Decrees
  • Co-parenting communication and conflict reduction
  • Alternative dispute resolution and private settlement options

Before dedicating her career to mediation, Mara practiced law with the respected firms Gallagher & Kennedy and Steptoe & Johnson. She earned her Juris Doctor from the The University of Texas School of Law and later obtained her Master’s Degree in Professional Counseling with highest distinction.

In addition to her mediation work, Mara has served as an adjunct professor of counseling psychology, is a past president of the Arizona Counselors Association, and has taught, published, and presented extensively in both the legal and counseling fields. She remains actively involved in professional organizations related to family law, mediation, conflict resolution, and collaborative practice.

Mara is known for combining legal sophistication with emotional insight – helping couples navigate divorce with greater privacy, efficiency, respect, and long-term perspective.

ADR Experience

Mara has been mediating divorce matters for more than 19 years and has conducted over 6,000 mediation sessions with couples navigating separation. Throughout her career, she has helped the vast majority of clients reach comprehensive, workable agreements without litigation — and in some instances, even supported couples in reconciling.

Her approach is practical, balanced, and future-focused, guiding couples toward sustainable resolutions that feel fair, thoughtful, and durable over time

Approach

Our Divorce Mediation approach is a client-centered approach based on the teachings of Carl Rogers (Person-Centered, Client-Center, Rogerian Counseling Theories), who, in my opinion, is the founder of mediation.  Mediation is really based in psychology, not law.  It’s about helping individuals and couples find the best path and the healthiest way to move forward by giving them a compassionate, supportive, non-judgmental environment to be heard and explore options.  We do not conduct “settlement negotiations,” during litigation where sessions usually are conducted in separate rooms with lawyers and litigation strategy is brought into the discussions.  Instead, we cut through all that and focus on the couple’s real  goals, needs and hopes.  In getting down to the basics and building back up, people are able to see their way to workable solutions.

Fees and Provisos

Our firm offers premium, flat-fee divorce mediation services designed for couples seeking a sophisticated, efficient, and private alternative to litigation. Fees vary depending on the complexity of the financial and parenting issues involved, the level of support required, and whether additional professional services are needed during the process.

Unlike traditional litigation, where costs can escalate unpredictably, our flat-fee structure allows couples to move through divorce with greater financial transparency, efficiency, and control. Mediation services may include parenting plan development, financial and property division discussions, preparation of court filings, drafting of settlement agreements and divorce decrees, and coordination with outside financial, tax, business valuation, estate planning, or mental health professionals when appropriate.

Our boutique practice frequently works with high-net-worth and complex-asset matters involving business interests, executive compensation, retirement accounts, substantial real estate holdings, and sophisticated investment portfolios. We also collaborate with clients’ existing financial advisors, accountants, therapists, or other trusted professionals as desired.

All mediators within the firm are actively licensed Arizona attorneys. While we do not represent either party as litigation counsel, our legal and counseling background allows us to guide productive discussions, identify potential issues before they become disputes, and help couples reach thoughtful, durable agreements.

Private consultations may be scheduled through Modern Mediation.
