Description of Practice

Barbara Brown has been mediating full time since 2006, focusing on business, commercial, employment, and real estate matters. Barbara's litigation and other experience, plus thorough preparation for each case, bring substantive expertise and credibility to her mediations. Known for her perseverance in pursuing resolution, Barbara has often been told that she is a very perceptive listener who brings intuition, good judgment, and always-needed calm into the room.

Professional Background

During her 28 years as a litigator Barbara Brown represented both plaintiffs and defendants in business, commercial, employment, and real estate matters. She had her own firm, The Brown Law Firm, for over 10 years. Before that she spent five years as Senior Counsel at First Interstate Bank and 12 years in private practice. Ms. Brown is licensed by the State Bar of California; the United States District Court, Central and Northern Divisions; the Ninth and Tenth Circuit Courts of Appeals; the United States Tax Court; and the United States Supreme Court. While there are many valid theories about and approaches to mediation, Barbara Brown believes that the mediator must be able to make an analytical evaluation of the facts and the law as well as work with the emotional components of the case. Ms. Brown is able to do both. She has the substantive expertise from her 28 years of litigation experience to credibly and persuasively evaluate each side's position. She also believes, however, that all parties deserve to be heard and understood; and she has the life experience, training, and insight to identify and work with emotional factors that may be getting in the way of resolution. Ms. Brown believes that the parties themselves usually hold the key to resolution of their dispute; and she fosters their active participation, with the assistance of their counsel, in the mediation process.

Other Information

In addition to her experience as a business person with her own firm, Barbara has a wealth of personal experience outside the legal field that gives her a broad perspective and enables her to understand and work with different life experiences and viewpoints. She was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Thailand (1966 - 1968) where she taught English as a Second Language. She spent eight more years teaching before going to law school. She was a member of the Planning Commission for the City of Santa Monica (2000 - 2007) and served as chair in 2004 - 2005. She also served on the Advisory Board of Sojourn, a shelter for battered women and children (1996 - 2004).
