Description of Practice
I employ Adaptive Insight Mediation, in solo or co-mediation, applied to conflict and dispute situations for productive and transformative outcomes, learning, and creative engagement of individuals, institutions, and organizations.
Having worked in the private, public, and education sectors, I have held a wide range of jobs – from draftsman and wireman, union steward and poet, to teacher, policy and program strategist and analyst, systems designer, and senior manager. I left the U.S. Government after 37 years, with two decades experience in technology transfer for sustainable development, trade, and research in energy, climate, and environment – supporting activities throughout the world under the aegis of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. I taught strategic thinking on the faculty of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces (now the Eisenhower Institute of the National Defense University) and was co-founder of a 4-year college. Using my background in group dynamics, organizational development and alternative dispute resolution, I began mediating in 2012, was professionally certified at the beginning of 2017, and in 2019, was certified for mediating in the Delaware Superior Court. I am currently working on coaching certification.
Working with the Center for Community Justice at People’s Place in Delaware since 2012, I have done well over 100 mediations and several hundred hours in victim-offender and community mediation work, to help resolve a variety of court-referred cases. Also experienced in workplace, domestic and family situations, including elder mediation. Workplace dispute resolution includes EEO and labor-management negotiation, in government, educational, and nonprofit settings, and with private businesses and parties.

Adaptive Insight Mediation strategy recognizes an Ecological Mediation Paradigm, within which learning occurs for both the parties and the mediators. Employing elements of Interest-Based, Transformative, Narrative and other methodologies, the learning-centered Insight Mediation approach has been integrated within the ecological and complex adaptive systems paradigms. Consequently, it can effectively address both the difficult challenges associated with high-conflict issues and personalities and the creative opportunities for using conflict as a source of innovation.
Fees are negotiable by need and complexity of case. The basic hourly rate is $150-250 plus expenses (for location or travel, and preparation, as necessary). Fees are generally split between parties.
Married for over 25 years, I have also been through divorce in a prior marriage of 14 years. My current wife and I blended our families and raised 5 children, including a grandchild from birth, whom we adopted. We have previously lived in a multi-generational household, and provided care during my mother’s final years with Alzheimer’s. We raised a child with Asperger’s Syndrome. In other activities, I work on behalf of community engagement to improve local governance, planning, and resiliency in promoting sustainability for land use, climate action, energy and water. I support initiatives for protection of citizen, civil, and human rights; for building bridges among culturally-diverse communities; and, for developing nonviolent culture in and out of prisons.
