Stephen Anway is a partner in the New York office of Squire Sanders (US) LLP. He acts as counsel to sovereign nations and multinational corporations in investment-treaty and international commercial disputes. Stephen’s investment-treaty experience includes acting as lead counsel for the Czech Republic in Phoenix Action, Ltd. v. Czech Republic, ICSID Case No. ARB/06/5, which is the seminal investment-treaty case on the principle of good faith and abuse of rights under public international law. With regard to international commercial disputes, Stephen was counsel for the winning party in two of the top 12 arbitral awards in the world from 2004 to 2009, as ranked by the American Lawyer’s Focus Europe. Both were multi-billion dollar awards in favor of his clients. Most recently, he was part of arbitration teams that successfully defended the Czech Republic in another investment-treaty case, InterTrade Holding BmgH v. Czech Republic, UNCITRAL, Final Award, May 29, 2012, and that won a €450 million ICC award dated August 30, 2012.
