Mediation and Yoga

Meditation and Yoga seem to go hand in hand.

Mediation and Yoga may be rare, however it may be a value in your dispute.

Recently I was asked to mediate a dispute on a non-disclosure issue on California Real Estate.

The room was filled with Lawyers, Brokers, a Claims adjuster and the buyers of the real estate.

The table was filled with legal documents and one of the buyers brought her blue Yoga Mat.

She explained to the mediator she was in pain and stressed.

The mediator encouraged to feel comfortable and offered her empathy as to her “special needs”.

As the parties were exchanging a dialog, I could see she looked tired and stressed.

She asked to lay in the attorneys office and began Yoga.

I followed her into the office and gave her updates as to the mediation process.

She seemed to relax and her pain was eased in her Yoga.

The retired medical doctor buyer, knew that Yoga was a form of medicine and as the mediator it was a first to see the impacts of Yoga in a conflict.

Many may say this technique was unconventional, however the mediator encouraged and the parties at the table accepted her needs.

In the end we reached a settlement vs further litigation and saw first hand the value of open communications with less stress.

I shared my observation with Yoga Instructor Susan Lawrence of Sonora and she said Yoga is Medicine.

I share this with my fellow mediators as an experience that is worthy of having in your “Tool” bag.
