The European Union on Monday dismissed a proposal by Russian President Vladimir Putin to appoint former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder as a mediator for peace negotiations in Ukraine. European officials cited Schröder’s historical ties to Russian state energy companies as a barrier to neutrality, as reported by The Guardian.
European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas addressed the suggestion in Brussels prior to a meeting with foreign ministers. She emphasized the strategic risk of allowing Russia to select a representative for the European side during the ongoing conflict.
“First, if we give Russia the right to appoint a negotiator on our behalf, that would not be very wise,” said Kaja Kallas, the EU’s top diplomat.
