The city of Mackinac Island, Hoffmann Family of Companies’ Arnold Transit Company and Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry have agreed to enter mediation regarding ferry service in 2027 and beyond, according to the Fair Access to Mackinac Island coalition.
The coalition praised the decision to pursue mediation, saying it is encouraged that both sides are working toward a long-term solution for ferry service to the island.
“Our mission is to encourage fair, consistent ferry service for anyone who wants to make memories on Mackinac Island,” John Sellek, coalition spokesman, said in a statement Wednesday. “While ferry service continues this year, we are excited to see that the city and ferry service are coming to the table and optimistic that they can work together to negotiate a solution for next year and beyond.”
Ferry service remains available throughout the 2026 season.
In an email response, Rachel Berkowitz, vice president of marketing and communications for Hoffmann Family of Companies, noted the coalition’s message and said the companies are “pleased to be working with local officials to reach a constructive path forward.”
“The top priority of Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry and Arnold Transit Company remains delivering safe, reliable, and affordable ferry service to residents, visitors, and everyone who depends on access to Mackinac Island for years to come,” she wrote.
The agreement to enter mediation comes a week after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed bipartisan legislation giving Mackinac Island voters the opportunity to amend the city charter and grant the city authority to regulate all aspects of ferry service to and from the island. If approved by voters, the change would allow the city to regulate ferry prices and related fees, including charges for baggage, parking and early boarding.
The legislation followed the consolidation of the island’s two ferry operators under a single parent company, Hoffmann Family of Companies, in 2024.
