Robert Benjamin Wins ACR Haynes Award

The Association for Conflict Resolution will award the John Haynes Distinguished Mediator Award to Robert Benjamin at its 9th Annual Conference in Atlanta, GA, October 7-10, 2009. Benjamin was nominated for the honor based on his substantial contributions to the field of mediation in the United States and abroad, his provocative writing about mediation, and his shaping of successful contemporary approaches to mediation.

The John Haynes Distinguished Mediator Award is presented to a leader in mediation who “demonstrates personal and professional commitment to finding mediation solutions to conflict while balancing therapeutic and legal perspectives.” In keeping with Haynes’ legacy as a respected author and practitioner, international trainer and pioneer in the field of family mediation, Benjamin has demonstrated innovation, creativity, and outstanding competence in his published writings, training, and practice, as well as maintained personal and professional integrity and embraced a sense of humor in his writings. He joins a notable group of his peers who have received the award in recent years, including Peter Salem, Jim Melamed, Dr. Arnie Shienvold and Nina Meierding.

With 30 years of experience as a mediator, Benjamin, trained as a lawyer and social worker, has worked in conflict resolution within the context of business/civil, family/divorce, employment and healthcare disputes. Benjamin is a past president of the Academy of Family Mediators and has authored book contributions and articles on mediation, negotiation and conflict resolution. He disseminates his knowledge about mediation with students as a standing Adjunct Professor at the Straus Institute for Conflict Resolution of the Pepperdine University School of Law, at Southern Methodist University’s Program on Conflict Resolution and in several other schools and universities.
